Hey little humans, I’m Norma Jean and welcome to Stay Wild! This is episode 9 with guest, Brynne Obeid. Brynne is a Middle Grade Educator, a Social Emotional Learning Enthusiast, and a long-term Bali Expat. She has been living in Ubud, Bali for 6 years. Her journey as a teacher, experiencing different values and cultures, has brought her into social emotional learning which teaches the children to develop empathy, resolve conflicts peacefully, and deepen relationships. “How do you create your own personal identity when you’ve got all of these different aspects coming together?” On this episode, she explains what social emotional learning is all about and how she came across this work. She also explains the difference between a third culture kid and a cross cultural kid, as well as the difference between being rude and being a bully. Teaching children with diverse cultural backgrounds has taught her a great deal about life. “You don’t have to look back to your tribe, to your country, and their values, and their culture, and their language, to know what you like.” Brynne tells her story as a long-term expat. She brings us alongside her journey on how she ended up in Bali. Living in a place of multicultural people, she realized that language and values diversity is not a reason for disparity. “When Bali calls, there’s no refusing her.” Join us in this conversation about social emotional learning, cultural diversity, and being an expat.
