Hey little humans, I’m Norma Jean and welcome to Stay Wild! This is episode 26 with today’s guest, Rex Sumner. Rex Sumner is such an interesting individual with a very rich background. As a youngster worked his passage on a container ship to Australia where he worked as a cowboy, gold-miner, door-to-door salesman and fruit-picker, before switching from Zoology to the Army to study at Sandhurst. He has spent many years in the Far East and is very passionate about SNAKES. Yes, snakes. "Every single snake in the world thinks YOU want to eat it. So it's terrified of you." On this episode, Rex tells us about the “magnificent, powerful” creature which is the snake. Rex’s passion has led him to become a support of the Bali Reptile Rescue, a non-profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates snakes all over Bali. Rex emphasizes on how to handle snakes - and the general rule of thumb is never chase it. “Do not do any of the things that you’ve been told to in the past.” Especially not sucking the venom out in case you’ve been bitten - that’s Rex’s top tip. Amazingly enough, the first aid for snake bites is washing the wound area out with… pee! And then rinse it off of course. During our conversation, Rex teaches us about techniques to follow when faced with snake bites! Hey little humans, I’m Norma Jean and welcome to Stay Wild! This is episode 25 with today’s guest, Sydney Weiss. Sydney is a host, creator, and most importantly, a joy seeker. She is a lawyer passionate about people, connection, the environment, and creating real social change for our world. “Joy is the process of connecting, of meeting new people.” On this episode, Sydney talks about being bullied on the playground and not being able to express herself fully because she was afraid people might not like what she has to say. She also talks about the time, when she was studying for the bar, she sent her body into overdrive - which ultimately led her to getting and sick and having appendicitis. It was a most challenging time, but she got through it. "By showing up for yourself in whatever moment it is, it sets the example for someone else and they feel compelled to do it too. She has worked at Google, MoPub, and Twitter. She is the author of Something More: A Working Professional’s Search for Creativity, Purpose, and Peace. Growing up, Bernadette has always been passionate about making art, but life brought her to a different path as she studied engineering and landing a career in tech. She was very deep into the tech world, but felt like she was missing out on something in life. So she turned around and went back to creating art. "One of the things I've learned is that things take time." On this episode, she talks about the struggles she faced during the process of writing her book and when it was time for her to take on what she really loved and wanted to do: art. Hey little humans, I’m Norma Jean and welcome to Stay Wild! This is episode 22 with today’s guest, Catie Disabato. Catie is a creative writer and novelist living in Los Angeles. Her debut novel went out in May 2015 titled “Ghost Network”, which is a story of a pop singer who went missing and the pursuit to find her. Catie discovered her passion in writing at a very young age and has decided to pursue this career. She got a degree in creative writing and followed this path. “I’ve always wanted to be a writer ever since I was a kid.” On this episode, Catie shares her journey on how she became a writer and how she keeps herself motivated. Writing a novel takes months or even years to accomplish - and for the Ghost Network, it took over 5 years to be published. She shares the process in writing the novel and the inspiration behind its creation. “I feel like I am my work in general, but I identify with the process of doing the work more than any single piece.” This is an interesting episode that will surely bring out the creativity in you. Colette is an Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor, Panchakarma Technician, and a Yoga Instructor who came to Bali to learn more about the body and spirit. She has been in the health and fitness world for several years and went through a realization during her 20’s that her supposedly healthy lifestyle is causing her mind and body to be out of balance. Studying Ayurveda helped her get back on track and learned how to live her life according to her unique physical and mental constitution – and she is here to educate other people. “[Ayurveda] is about understanding your unique physical and mental constitution and it gives you guidelines in every aspect of your life.” On this episode, Colette explains what Ayurveda is and how it helps us understand our mind and body. She also explains how this traditional healing modality opens the door to opportunities.
